 Well it’s about time!!

Full size patterns are now available!

We have had many requests and much interest in our unique water barrel storage rack design.

There are many do-it-yourself, handy people in the the prepping community, so we now have a way to help you get the satisfaction of building our rack with your own hands.

We are now offering full size paper patterns (30# brown “kraft” paper) available for purchase.  These patterns are cut with precision on the same precision equipment that is used to cut our water barrel storage racks. Just to be clear, they are not printed on paper requiring you to cut them; they are already cut in the full-size shape of the rack. The patterns are shipped in a tube, eliminating unnecessary folds.  This will make it easy for you to take the plans right out of the package, lay them on your material and start cutting.  Included with the patterns is a list of recommended materials.  Instructions are not included, as we are assuming basic woodworking knowledge by those purchasing these patterns.

We are certain that having our patterns as a foundation for your project will help in your success.

If you are interested, we sell the patterns for $ 29.95, shipping included.

Just click “Buy Now” and we will get the patterns shipped.

Water Storage Guidelines

There are many different options for storing water.  Whether you use 2 liter soda bottles, 55 gallon water barrels or have a 275 gallon cube in your back yard, the principles of water storage are the same.

Use food grade containers.  Make sure they are cleaned out very well before using to prevent contamination and spoilage in your water.  We use 55 gallon water barrels that had previously been used to store the syrup used in soda pop manufacturing.  We used a pressure washer to clean out any remnants of syrup, then rinsed with a basic bleach solution to sanitize the barrels.  Finally, we finished up the cleaning process with an overall plain water rinse.

Treat your water if necessary.  If the source of the water you plan to store is commercially treated with chlorine, you probably do not need to do anything else to it.  In our case, our water is commercially treated through our municipal water system; however, out of necessity we store it outside in the extreme heat and therefore, we do add some extra bleach.  If your water source is untreated for any reason (i.e. many private wells are not treated), then according to FEMA you should add unscented household chlorine bleach to your water, 2 drops per 2 liter bottle (to be repeated once if a slight chlorine smell does not exist after first application).  For the appropriate quantities of bleach to be added to larger storage containers, do your research as there is much varying information out there.  Personally, we chose to add 1/2 cup of bleach to our 55 gallon containers which fell in the middle of the many different recommendations.  If you are adding bleach to your water, make sure your bleach is the basic household bleach, not scented, color safe, etc.  Keep in mind, bleach loses it’s effectiveness over time (even in the bleach bottle).  If we ever need to use our stored water, we would certainly examine it to see if it looked and smelled okay.  At a minimum, we would probably boil it and run it through a Brita filter before drinking.  Another note:  if you are filling a large container from a garden hose, please get a “safe drinking water” hose.  I recently spent a day researching the many different kinds of safe drinking water garden hoses and ended up purchasing the Water Right brand via Amazon.   I will post a review later after we have some experience with the hose.

FEMA recommends replacing stored water at least every 6 months.  If you are using 55 gallon water barrels, it is easiest to access and replace your water reserves by storing your barrels horizontally.  We can help you with our very economical horizontal water barrel storage rack.  This rack will help you get organized and reduce your water storage footprint, not to mention keep you from going through the laborious process of using a pump and siphon to empty your water barrels.  This rack is incredibly strong.  Check out our drop test here (second video).  See how quickly you can assemble our rack without any tools here (first video).

Never take water for granted . . .

Many years ago, before I ever thought about storing water, I was taking a shower and suddenly the water slowed to a trickle and then completely stopped.  I had not turned the spigot in any way and was puzzled as to why the water shut off all by itself.  Well, as it turned out, I found a notice that had been placed on our door by the city warning of the impending shutoff due to some type of maintenance work to be performed on the water system.  We were without tap water for several hours and I was unprepared since I rarely use the front door and therefore had not seen the notice.  I was stunned at how easy it was to just shut the water off on a large scale.  We assume that water will always be there when we turn on the tap; however, as I discovered in the shower that day . . . we should never make this assumption.  According to FEMA, at a minimum, everyone should have enough drinking water stored to supply for three days.  As a rule of thumb, one gallon per person, per day.  Again, this is a minimum recommendation.  In this day of global instability, storing enough water for a minimum of several weeks (or months) would be more than reasonable.  Many people choose to store water in 55 gallon water barrels.  If you choose this method, then a horizontal water storage rack can make your water storage much more accessible, organized and convenient.  If you use 55 gallon water barrels, check out our water barrel storage rack here.

Water Insurance for your Family

Water barrel storage rack

We have no hesitations when getting insurance for a car, house or boat; however, when it comes to water insurance (i.e water stored for an emergency) you are viewed as being extreme.  A car with a dented fender is not a life and death situation, but not having drinking water available most definitely is.

As a dad, the last thing I want to hear is one of my little ones saying, “Dad, I am so thirsty” and not being able to provide a simple drink of clean water.

Also, if there is an emergency, do you really want to be one of the people fighting in the grocery store for the last flat of bottled water?

Get some water barrels and take care of your family, it is just that simple!!!
